Ruth Matete Bags Tusker Project Fame Season 5 Finals!

On Sunday 29th July 2012, the curtains came down on the popular East African reality tv musical talent show Tusker Project Fame Season 5 with 26 year old Kenyan Communications graduate Ruth Matete (here's her facebook fanpage) emerging the winner! To a great extent she was hugely popular especially amongst young Kenyans and tipped to win due to her strong voice and Neosoul/RnB songstress prowess.
Whether or not her win will translate into a successful musical career is perhaps what critics are out to watch for as previous winners have hardly left a mark in the musical scene within the region. Will she perhaps change the trend? time will tell.

As a winner Ruth Matete takes home Kenya shillings 5 Million in cash, a 10 Million Kenya shillings recording contract with Universal Group , one year security services from G4S and a whole lot of other freebies.

Her performance in the academy was constant often managing to pull impressive feats with sterling stage performances of the different genre of songs she was put up to.From quite early in the show one could tell that she would make it to the final two.She did not disappoint in that regard!

Her second strongest competition was Rwandan competitor Jackson Kalimba who wowed the crowd with a spectacular performance of Lokua Kanza's song Voir Le Jour which when translated means 'until i see the day' .Earlier in the competition a controversy had simmered in certain circles as to whether Jackson Kalimba qualified as a professional musician prior to the auditions of the show which seeks novel talent.

Jackson Kalimba however ended up being a close third after Kenyan Doreen Muchiri (in my two cents he was better than Doreen hands down) who performed dismally. In my take Doreen though talented goes off to the world with a performance that befits probation.During the show she earned the title "probation queen"-as an artiste she faces the daunting task of avoiding being dubbed the "probation artiste".

Surprisingly,Joe Irankunda of Burundi managed to survive to the top 5 whereas his musical prowess was severely limited. He basically was comedic, lacked vocal appeal but his strategy lasted him in the academy to the last five standing and for that he deserves a measure of congratulations. As to whether he will translate into a successful musician is an enigma of sorts.

Tusker Project Fame Season 5 and Social Media:

What was particularly impressive about Tusker Project Fame Season 5 was perhaps its use of social media i.e,YouTube, Facebook and Twitter(@tuskerlager-my tip next time use  a twitter handle commensurate to the show and not a brand name) to engage the viewers in real time conversations. Selling a brand via social media adheres to different rules as opposed to traditional media. The majority users being the youth want a buzz not a corporate trying to sell them something in such an open manner.

According to the website Hashtracking.com the #tpf5 generated a massive over 70,000 impressions within 24 hours reaching over 56K people indicating the online buzz on the show was gigantic. Samsung Kenya also hyped the show by introducing tablets both in the show performances and in coordinating student tasks during their stay at the Tusker academy. That was significant progress and improvement as compared to past competitions.

TPF & The Future:

The challenge for the organizers is to reinvent the show and take it to a whole new level in the next season. One place that needs to be re-engineered perhaps is the modus operandi of the show ....the whole voting fiasco, the student tasks, the eviction shows to ensure the level of  unpredictability is hyped to a whole new level.Putting three or four contestants on probation each week as a way of eliminating week performers has now been surpassed by time! Re think the concept!

The organizers should also  re model the website....requiring users to input their age, country of origin and subscribe to terms and conditions takes out the beauty of having anything online, unless your website belongs to the r-rated category, that option should have long been discarded. The website also needs prompt updating, live streaming,visual-graphic appeal  and other antics that the internet nowadays offers!

Davis Ntare Wins Tusker Project Fame 4

Breaking News yet once again Uganda carries the trophy!Davis Hillary Ntare of Uganda has emerged the winner of the reality tv music competition Tusker Project Fame 4! Davis win was well deserved as comparably the second runners up Tanzanian Msechu's style of singing closely resembled a Kidum the musician clone .It is however notable that his final lackluster performance of the renowned Michael Jackson's hit song "Billy Jean" was bellow par however it is his consistency in the Tusker Project Fame  Music academy that perhaps beguiled the viewers to vote for him.

This was the second time that Davis was having a go at the academy and he clearly demonstrated that the Judges should have considered him a worthy candidate the first time.

The teary David who was emotionally overwhelmed at the feat walks away with a prize money of Kenya Shillings Five Million and a recording contract with Gallo records. The question however remains, unlike past winners will Davis Ntare leave a mark/illustrious career after the win or fade back in the background as has been the case of past winners in this reality TV talent search music show?Time will tell.

TPF 2009 : Alpha Rwirangira Brings Down The House

Last nights show in the much famed East African Reality Tv Show Tusker Project Fame 2009 was real exhilarating ;the contestants in the musical academy were each performing their own original composition and perhaps for the first time the show uncovered a real African Reggae superstar who is destined for success while still in the house!

Alpha Rwirangira of Rwanda
sang a swahili/rwandese song that encouraged africans never again to have a repeat of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide! The song entitled "tusikubali " left the attendants at the show and by extension all listeners completely entertained and received a standing ovation from the judges, teachers and audience. It was a masterpiece , a marvelous song that should have the UN and other international organizations poaching for it to be used in campaigning against social apathy, hatred, ethnicity, gender violence, wars, genocide and other social atrocities that continue to encumber the African continent.

Alpha Rwirangira is star of his won right , deserves this post and positive recommendation! On the other hand Kenyan songstress Patricia Wangechi Kihoro threw wood by choosing a genre of songs.i.e neosoul that has too many western greats that it requires exceptional talent to cut a niche for oneself. Her song had too much of Erykah Badu and India Arie influences and was lacklustre in performance leaving the Judges marginally impressed. On the otherhand the Ugandan Ladies Maureen and Leah definately had songs with international appeal and strong African tones that can readily cut for them a niche in the international music market in a similar manner as has Angelique KidjoSuzzana Owiyo... etc

Tusker Project Fame 3 Contestants !(Update)

Tusker Project Fame Three (3)is back with a bang and a major blunder at the opening show on Saturday last week. But without doubt Judge Ian will have a tough time this time ,judging from the auditions without good technical knowledge on singing he is a goner! The new contestants are refined and have upped their game. I say this with specific focus on the Rwandese contestant Nina Bola who sung with impeccable french...quite a performance!

So who are the contestants who made it to the reality tv musical talent academy :

From Kenya we have:
  1. Bernard Nganga (age 23)
  2. Patricia Wangechi Kihoro (age 23) a face to watch& Poised to win !
  3. Debarl Clement Inea( age 32)(Evicted) a mature lad set to Jazz the ladies for sure!

From Tanzania we have:
  1. Illuminata Rwelamira( age 28)(Evicted) she had a sultry, illuminatory voice.
  2. Kelvin Stephen (age 24)(Evicted)
  3. Caroline Uliwa(age 22) the youngest contestant(Evicted).
From Uganda we have:
  1. Karolyne Nabulime (age 26) another face to watch
  2. Leah Atute(age 25) (Evicted)
  3. Maureen Kabasiita(age 26) gifted voice

From Rwanda (first time to participate in Tusker Project Fame):

  1. Nina Bola(age 23)(evicted) .I must say she has a niche in French Music and a talent but unfortunately she was evicted on Saturday Night the 13th of September, 2009 .Being a Francophone and participating in a show where the majority were anglophone speaking countries ,her talent could not be captured. Nina Bola is star yet to rise!
  2. Christian Rwirangira(age 23)(Evicted)
  3. Alpha Rwirangira( age 23)Africa's Next Great Reggae Maestro...mad talent(Endorsing him for the victory sms tusker 3 and send to 8737 in Kenya, 7197 in Uganda, 15522 in Tanzania and 123 in Rwanda).(UPDATE)ALPHA EMERGES WINNER OF TUSKER PROJECT FAME 2009 KUDOS ! CONGRATS

    !!

Its good to see talent bubble forth but i hope there will be no Hemedi comedy this time, just music being nurtured however Nganga seems to be the in house comedian. Keep it locked!(PHOTOS COURTESY OF TUSKER PROJECT FAME 3 WEBSITE)

1ST Eviction Show: Sunday 30th August, 2009: Kelvin of Tanzania was evicted ,Nina Bola was unfairly put on probation a second time whereas Ngangalito survived .But not for too long...

2nd Eviction Show: Saturday 5th September, 2009 : Caroline Uliwa of Tanzania was deservedly evicted.

3rd Eviction Show: Saturday 12th September, 2009: Nina Bola of Rwanda was wrongfully evicted whereas the untalented Ngang'a of Kenya continues to joy ride in the house.

4th Eviction Show: Saturday 19th September, 2009:Illuminata Rwelamira of Tanzania and Christian Rwirangira of Rwanda were evicted. Ngangalito survived...i still wonder why! Debarl is on probation ,he chose a wrong song and is obsessed with his dance steps and image projection to the detriment of his singing.I am beginning to feel this contest is a Kenyan affair as usual.
For Fairness the next season should be hosted in a different Country. The audience voting system seems tilted to favour the host Country!

5th Eviction Show:Saturday 26 September, 2009: Kenyan Debarl Inea is evicted by strategy, the female contestants including Patricia voted him out to ensure that as a stiff contender/competition for the grand prize he is out of the way to their suprise Alpha Rwirangira of Rwanda has emerged a star in his own right.Africa's next great reggae maestro.Kudos Alpha i would buy your album anytime.

6th Eviction Show: Faced with the dificult task to choose the6th Evictee Alpha Chose to save Maureen thereby by default Leah Atute became the 6th contestant to Leave the academy. Now all the students are on probation.

Tusker Project Fame 3 Auditions(update)

Kenya's favorite reality tv and music talent search show Tusker Project Fame Season 3 is now set for its official launch any time soon this month with 12 new contestants from Kenya ,Uganda and Tanzania aiming to join the music academy and win the prestigious prize of Kshs. 5,000,000/=, a brand New Mercedes Car and a recording contract with Gallo records. Without doubt the auditions have revealed that competition will be stiff in these 3rd Season. Some exceptional talents were seen especially from Rwanda and Uganda where unfortunately there was not much hype about the show at the auditions level!

So what does the Judge Panel look like, for now only the Kenyan Judge is now: The contentious, no nonsense tell it as it is theatre thespian Ian Mbugua!

The teachers panel will include:
  • Musician Achieng Abura as Principal of the 8 weeks Tusker Project Fame Academy
  • Jazz Artist Joseph Hellon( another Ian In the Making) as music Director
  • Kavutha Mwanzia_ Vocal Director
  • Edwin Odhiambo - Dance Instructor
The show will be hosted by two radio personalities Nation Media Groups Easy Fm radio host Sheila Mwanyigha aka Nikki and new Ugandan host Mich Egwang (Mnet's Deal or No Deal Hosts) . The show will have new faces and new flavor so as to have international appeal as opposed to previous editions which were almost a Kenyan affair. To up the game the TPF 3 website is now live with more stringent conditions.Sponsored Conversations300x100

Tusker Project Fame 3(update)

It is now official season 3 of the reality tv talent search programme Tusker Project Fame 3 is set to begin with auditions as from July 4&5 ,2009.The show will be aired on Royal Media's Citizen TV.Tusker project fame 3 has began this time with enough hiccups and media goofs(see this past post) . It almost seemed as if the show would not go through! Even as we speak there is nothing telling on the official Project fame Website. But at least watching the build up show featuring past contestants such as Kaz, David Ogola, Wendy Kimani...etc proved that the show organisers are now serious.

For a certainty the show has bred stars such as Naakaya Sumari( who recently was interviewed on CNN's African Voices program) ,Valerie Kimani etc but i believe of last years contestants Wendy Kimani & David Ogola are set for great heights. The songs they have produced are pretty marvelous, quite entertaining! Further, what is perhaps amazing and ironical is that unlike reality tv series in the USA& Europe, the runners up tend to do better than the winners. I partly attribute this to the Judges and i hope that this time we will have more diversity.

At the same time i hope it will be a truly East African contest and not a Kenyan affair. So far it seems so as the other Countries have been given a single day for auditions unlike Kenya...so where is the equity? All in all may the show prove to be more captivating and better than past shows.Typically Swiss Hotels

EABL Tusker Project Fame 3

Some time in January this year there was a media item on the launch of the talent search reality TV show dubbed" Tusker Project Fame III" poised for March 17 , 2009 .The latest would be the third series in the program edition! However to date nothing has been forthcoming nor is there further official communication. This sad state of affairs is a tale tale sign of trouble for the TV program that was a favourite in East Africa and that has seen the budding of new talent such as Naakaya, Esther Mugizi Nabaasa etc.Typically Swiss Hotels

The official website has a blank screen....leading us to question what really is in the offing ? Will Tusker Project Fame 3 materialize soon or was it a media goof/public relation stunt?East African Breweries Limited (EABL) your comment?300x100

Ugandan Esther Mugizi Wins TPF 2!!!!

Finally, the curtain came down falling on Tusker Project Fame Two with the Ugandan beauty maestro, contestant and songstress Esther Mugizi bagging the 5 million Kenya Shillings price, a prestigious recording contract with the biggest recording label and company in Africa Gallo Records, make up and grooming from Ashley’s Beauty College for 6 months, a medical cover worth 10 million with Resolution Health and a free laptop and butterfly connection from Kenya Data Networks

The finale was the most impressive star studded event ever performed on live TV within the East African region! With guest performances by, AY of Tanzania, Bobby wine of Uganda, Redsan, Jua Cali and Debra Sainapei of Kenya, There was also impressive dance performances and Choreography by Sarakasi Dancers!

Contestants Performances:

Each of the four final contestants performed the following songs:

4th Runner up-Victor Bali performed:

1. “Gauo”

2. “Apologize” by one Republic

3. “Good Times”-Luther Vandross NB truth be told Steve or Jacob should have made it to this stage, Victors performances were non-impressive, he had simply reached his epitome and couldn’t get better than that !he just was not good enough

3RD Runners up –David Ogola Performed

1. “Koth Biro” by Ayub Ogada the Successful Nyatiti playing British based Kenyan Musical Maestro

2. “Cry Me A River” by Craig David-Performance here was under par excellon!

3. “Purple Rain” by Price-This song brought out David’s good R& B Voice-He has a future musically we will watch his space!

2nd Runners up –Kenya’s Favorite Wendy Kimani

1. “Welcome” by Papa Wemba

2. “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera

3. Soul Classic “No Romance Without Finance” Wendy Kimani is already a winner by all standards just that one person had to carry the crown but she is talented and has all that it takes to be a superstar. If she was in Mnet Idols she would be among the finalist contestants!

Future Lessons:

Tusker Project fame just like fine wine is getting finer and maturing with age but the following suggestions would be in order for the production team:

v Next time host the show in another East African Country for a truly East African feel and fairness in the competition

v Re-model your voting system, strangely though it seems the voting system tends to favor the hosting Country ,Weak candidates make it to the top four strong contestants are eliminated early which is highly unfortunate

v Change the Judges and Teachers-Please audition openly for these positions

v Tusker Project Fame location/house should have an in-house studio built, expose the students to a studio environment. It’s saddening to note that of the 71 days in the Tusker Project fame house not even one day did the students spend in a production/recording studio unlike their counterparts in the MNET Idols competition. This may be the main reason why the Idols contestants are more refined singers and performances. Remember the students will spend more time in the recording studios if they are to be successful singers and performers.

v Next time hire me as a consultant and publicist: This blog had more than 5,000 unique hits due to the competition! And yer I know you were reading this, the judge’s comments were much telling! As for my readers I will still keep you entertained visit this blog regularly for insightful and interesting content!

Tusker Project "Fake"

As one watches Tusker Project Fame (II) it slowly but surely becomes apparent that the contestants this time have 'upped' their game!the teachers are strenuously fulfilling their duties..but the judges,my oh my the Judges! are letting us down perhaps the program should be dubbed "Tusker Project -Shame".

There is a glaring inherent weakness in this competition ,for one the composition and qualifications of the Judges :While Tshaka Mayanja and Dan Kiondo are credit worthy producers of long experience i highly doubt the capacity of Ian Mbugua(Hey East African Breweries Ltd must it be him all the time?i thought we have reputable producers and musicians here [Like Eric Wainaina ]with albums to their credit) to effectively Judge on the voice quality and audience appeal of the contestants.Yer its true that he is an accomplished theatre thespian and has directed award winning plays as the Director of Phoenix Players but still this is a totally different field to a great extent.Further the other Judges seem to have come up with a follow the Lead dog syndrome! If Ian says it sucks, the rest tow the line,if they disagree albeit reluctantly as if Ian is the Alpha and the Omega.

Star quality in the entertainment industry is determined by audience reaction and liking after all the audience (cd sales)are the ones who buy the audio cd's leading to stardom for any musician.Last weekend saw Wendy make a performance that can be lauded as the best the academy has ever seen so far since its inception.AND WHAT DID THAT ATTRACT?some ridiculous comment by Ian and his cronies telling her not to be fooled by the standing ovation that the crowd gave her.Poor Ian ,alone- he can only merit one cd-the audience will buy thousands.I verily think the Judges are pushing a personal agenda!Ian almost put Wendy and not Winfrey on probation!Indeed if Ian was to be the ultimate judge of all musicians-Akon would not be where he is now!Sometimes people just love distinct voices and audience appeal is the be it and be all.In fact that's what determines ultimately who is the best in American Idols!!

I dont know which school of thought he comes from.Often unfair and undue criticism discourages rather than encourages hard work. This is the 21st century we now know better as to what will motivate. If things continue at the current rate Hemedi(Man...ooop's boy without a voice will win the contest because he is"corkish"{in italics judges own words}.

Well we can rap the Judges all we can but they wont bulge!after all they say theirs is not an easy task and that each week four contestants have to go on probation(quite a lame rationale) but still that does not absolve them of any blunders they make indeed turning Project Fame to Project Fake! For now we plead Objectivity Ian..objectivity same goes for your cronies!

Tusker Project Fame-Faces to Watch

Who is most probably being eliminated in the much famed popular tv show Tusker Project Fame this coming weekend?I'd bet Hemedi Suleiman-the academy's juvenile minded "Mr Loverman"!Projection,Mr Hemedi projection and perception matter in any reality tv show! For now he is perceived as the insecure ,undecided and probably immature young man in the show which aims at getting the best vocal talents of to a record deal with Gallo records of south Africa.
(New!!!!!For update on winner see http://siku-moja.blogspot.com/2008/06/ugandan-esther-mugizi-wins-tpf-2.html)

The four contestants put on probation(possibly on their way out of the Tusker Academy) were:
  1. Hemedi Suileiman of Tanzania
  2. Ian Mwaisunga(Tanzania) -chose the wrong song
  3. Magdaline Muckoya(Kenyan)-local naive "miss baibes"trust me wont last long if you court unbridled romance in this academy!
  4. Winfrey Nannyojo-Too much competition in this show
The faces to watch and the contestants in here for the long haul are(correct me if im wrong):

( photos courtesy of Tusker Project Fame 2008 website)
  1. David Ogola:This Kenyan has talent possibly will be in the final two
  2. Esther Mugizi-Thats a Ugandan with powerful voice and pleasant suprises!
  3. Linah Blanche-Petite powerhouse/voice Tanzanian babe with all that it takes to win this competition. The only person ive seen with a strategy to stay in the academy for the long haul.
  4. Nsaali Jacob-First native African that has sang a country song that i have truly loved. This guy has great talent and great voice!I have never heard a brother sing country like this guy.He is a winner already!
  5. Stephen Oundo-Another Ugandan with good voice and commitment to win
  6. Wendy Kimani-Kenyan with strong and beautiful voice.Im sure many would concur she is Kenya's most favourite female contestant in the academy.
  7. Victor Bali-Kenyan from Kisumu almost mistook him for the Tanzanian music maestro Z'anto of Binti Kiziwi fame but has a good voice and quite a stage presence.
Well thats my list of famous seven and im certain many east Africans would concur with me but its up to the Project fame Judges as to who will stay in the academy to the grand finale !

LOL

last Sundays show (May 4th) was such a dissapointer. The Judges simply let the audience down and the organizers/sponsors of the show need to come down hard on the Judges (remember you are branding your products this kind of faults could prove costly!)if the show is to be viewed as a credible and legitimate elimination competition.Public perception is key!Remember last year the Judges were openly biased against the competitors from other East African Countries. This year they have begun again apparently neglecting to send poor performers to probation but opting to put the best in tow for elimination. Now Asha Ramadhani is out of the House that means if the elimination is to continue of the three top performers Linah,Wendy and Alice one may just have to go courtesy of the Judges! How we desire that our local show' s could subscribe to some creed of ethics rather than bloated egos.

Tusker Project Fame 2008

Tusker project fame 2006 took reality tv in the east african region to new heights!Project fame 2008 is expected to be exceedingly better!Theres already too much hype surrounding the event that seeks to tap into the musical talents of young vibrant aspiring musicians from the East African region through a perfomance academy, setting them up for a record deal that can earn them international fame. But the audience this time expects better! 12 contestants will be chosen from a series of region wide auditions to participate in the closed house academy.

(NB: UPDATE ON WINNER AT http://siku-moja.blogspot.com/2008/06/ugandan-esther-mugizi-wins-tpf-2.html
)
Audition forms can be downloaded at the official website for the 2008 tusker project fame which is: http://www.tuskerprojectfame.com/

The last event was most definately mirred by well founded claims of bias and prejudice by the Judges who were predominantly Kenyan and favoured Kenyan participants prompting one of the hosts Ugandan Kate Gaetano(of Big Brother Africa Fame )to openly challenge the judges to show some objectivity! This year we expect better. Our eyes are seriously focused on the organisers and hope that they will this time recruit reputable ,non partisan and objective judges from both local and international music and entertainment industry to steer the event. The show will be produced by Endemol East Africa who have an impressive array of international experience portofolio to match up with the event which will consume a whooping Kenya shillings350 million from the main sponsor East African Breweries Limited (EABL)!

Up for grabs this time will be a recording contract with Galo/Johnic records,Kenya shillings 5,000,000 and a state of art luxurious Mercedez Benz among other goodies for the winner! The winner this time is expected to exceed the talent that was captured in Valerie Kimani whose debut album Baiskeli is actually doing well in international markets but receiving fairly limited play and recognition in the domestic market. This is both good and bad, good because it stems Piracy ;bad because she has limited exposure and her talent is burried down under. Our entertainment buds are watered and eagerly awaiting and anticipating this seven week event!

LOL
The contestants are now in the house, 5 Kenyans, 5 Ugandans and 5 Tanzanians. The official grand opening was yesterday the 13 April, 2008.Somehow there was this feel that Tanzanians can hardly sing but rap! I hope the entrants in the academy will correct this misconception.

Citizen Tv will be bringing us live daily updates in Kenya ,while Star tv is the channel to wartch in Uganda. So lets get the conversation going and comment your views here as you can see this site has a high page ranking and im certain the contestants will be reading!LET THE SINGING BEGIN!

LOL

I have updated my post on the ongoings at the academy, here is the link>
http://siku-moja.blogspot.com/2008/04/tusker-project-fame-faces-to-watch.html

LOL

After the 4th may,2008 project fame show im sure most most viewers will agree with me, the judges need to go home! they seem to be pursuing a personal vendetta rather than being objective about the "elimination competition".If Ian reads this let him remember to stick to the issues and remain fair!Being egocentric never did anyone good in the long run.Non performers really must go and nobody should be put on probation in place of another who deservedly needs to be there!Probation puts one on the elimination list first and foremost, the issue of improving ones performance is secondary!Ama ?????
