Tigo subscribers to enjoy 36m music tracks on their smartphones

Music content is already the second most popular mobile phone feature in sub-Saharan Africa

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, January 14, 2015/ -- Tigo  today announced the launch of Tigo Music through a partnership with Deezer, the international music streaming service that will provide Tanzanians with unlimited music experience.

Announcing the launch of the new service in Dar es Salaam, Tigo Brand Manager, William Mpinga said through pre-paid data bundles from January 24, Tigo customers will be able to access more than 36 million tracks, including African and Tanzanian artistes, on their phones and tablets.

Additionally, Tigo will also be sourcing exciting new and local content through a new venture with the digital music company, Africa Music Rights, which funds, acquires and manages music rights across the African continent. Mpinga said.

There will be a launch ceremony for Tigo Music at Dar es Salaam’s Leaders Club grounds on January 24 where members of the public will be treated to live performances by leading local musicians such as Diamond Platinum, Ali Kiba, Professor J, Vanessa Mdee, Ben Paul, Isha Mashauzi, Malaika Band, Khadija Kopa, Yamoto Band, Msondo, Sikinde among others. Apart from giving Tigo customers unlimited access to local and international music, Tigo Music, according to Mr. Mpinga, will accord local artists with an opportunity earn extra payment from their songs listened to through the service.

Tigo will provide them training on how to use and benefit from the service, he said. “Tigo Tanzania is a company built on innovation. We are excited to be the first telecommunication company in Tanzania to give our customers such access to unlimited music. “As a digital lifestyle brand, our goal is to impact the music industry by providing a platform that not only allows for easy access to content by local artists, but also train our musicians on important issues such as intellectual property rights and marketing. This is our way of supporting local talent and growing the local music industry.” he added.

Tigo will introduce a variety of music service packages which will allow customers access through *148*00#. The introduction of Tigo Music in Tanzania follows the success of its launch in Ghana in 2014 and Latin America in 2013.

It has since become an integral part of people’s daily digital lives and synonymous with live music events headlined by some of the world’s best-known artists as well as with close-up studio recordings.

Music streaming is the fastest growing area for the global music industry and music content is already the second most popular mobile phone feature in sub-Saharan Africa.

Chloride Exide Ltd -Sauti Sol's "Lipala" Dance 'Meme':Are Kenyan Corporates Catching up on Social Media Trends?

Music Videos are becoming a powerful tool in modern day business environment especially in the social media scene, ever heard of  viral video meme remakes of Psys Gangnam , Beyonce's " All The Single Ladies” Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe,” and now the" Sha Nay Nay"(made after the legendary Martin Lawrence character 'Sheneneh Jenkins')  dance trending in the USA. Well corporates and Ad Agencies in the West have discovered the powerful marketing effect available in such self made videos and have gone ahead to make renditions of the same shedding the all suit and tie perception and painting themselves as Social, Friendly, Caring, Engaging...

A Kenyan firm Chloride Exide Ltd with marked presence in the East African Region has caught up on the trend. Here is a video of the firms employees dancing the  MTV EMA best African Act Award 2014 winner " Sauti Sols"

Lipala Dance !The video has over 4,000 views as at 30 October, 2014 though it was published on 27 October, 2014.Will it go viral? talk about free advertisement !

University Of Florida Swahili Students Dancing @diamondplatnumz "My Number One Song"

Diamond Platnumz
Tanzanian Bongo Singer @DiamondPlatnumz fans will certainly find this dance video beautiful but hilarious! Apparently University of Florida 2014  African Language Initiative(AFLi) Elementary Swahili students made an impressive dance video of the popular "Ngololo dance " tune and its generating quite a buzz online. You just have to appreciate the effort as Swahili is not their native tongue and attempting the rhythmic dance was clearly  a gargantuan task for them !

Reminds me of the film of the typical stereotype ad lib  "Whitemen Cant Dance(they even made a Movie)"! But surely the University of Florida Class deserve a pat on the back for the effort.Apart from the dance video they also created a tutorial video with the class engaged in a make believe Swahili conversation video.

Well that's a start and its pretty impressive one especially  considering it takes extra effort when one undertakes the task of learning a new language that they are not exposed to and hardly listen to it on a day to day basis ! I am sure the instructors are pleased  and had a good time while at it .Kudos Messrs  Filipo Lubua, John Munyui and Brenda Wawire!

Just A Band -Probably For Lovers Video !

The hit maker "Just a Band" have released a NEW VIDEO  on Youtube entitled Probably For Lovers that is set to go viral. The video song has all the hallmarks of a video that will go viral online with a catchy tune and especially appealing societal theme featuring people of various backgrounds miming the catchy lyrics.Once again they have released the video song exclusively online in an apparent move to appeal to their online fan base again.

Just A Band are remembered for the 2009 viral video "Makmende" which had a Global appeal and cast the group into the international limelight.Their latest song has a happy "sing to it appeal "and has been mostly shot by their mobile phones. This may just be their second big hit after an apparent 'visible absence' in the local entertainment scene. The video has been contrived by asking fans to submit their videos for  inclusion into the video .Will the Probably For Lovers Video replicate their earlier success. The Jury and verdict will be online!

Ruth Matete Bags Tusker Project Fame Season 5 Finals!

On Sunday 29th July 2012, the curtains came down on the popular East African reality tv musical talent show Tusker Project Fame Season 5 with 26 year old Kenyan Communications graduate Ruth Matete (here's her facebook fanpage) emerging the winner! To a great extent she was hugely popular especially amongst young Kenyans and tipped to win due to her strong voice and Neosoul/RnB songstress prowess.
Whether or not her win will translate into a successful musical career is perhaps what critics are out to watch for as previous winners have hardly left a mark in the musical scene within the region. Will she perhaps change the trend? time will tell.

As a winner Ruth Matete takes home Kenya shillings 5 Million in cash, a 10 Million Kenya shillings recording contract with Universal Group , one year security services from G4S and a whole lot of other freebies.

Her performance in the academy was constant often managing to pull impressive feats with sterling stage performances of the different genre of songs she was put up to.From quite early in the show one could tell that she would make it to the final two.She did not disappoint in that regard!

Her second strongest competition was Rwandan competitor Jackson Kalimba who wowed the crowd with a spectacular performance of Lokua Kanza's song Voir Le Jour which when translated means 'until i see the day' .Earlier in the competition a controversy had simmered in certain circles as to whether Jackson Kalimba qualified as a professional musician prior to the auditions of the show which seeks novel talent.

Jackson Kalimba however ended up being a close third after Kenyan Doreen Muchiri (in my two cents he was better than Doreen hands down) who performed dismally. In my take Doreen though talented goes off to the world with a performance that befits probation.During the show she earned the title "probation queen"-as an artiste she faces the daunting task of avoiding being dubbed the "probation artiste".

Surprisingly,Joe Irankunda of Burundi managed to survive to the top 5 whereas his musical prowess was severely limited. He basically was comedic, lacked vocal appeal but his strategy lasted him in the academy to the last five standing and for that he deserves a measure of congratulations. As to whether he will translate into a successful musician is an enigma of sorts.

Tusker Project Fame Season 5 and Social Media:

What was particularly impressive about Tusker Project Fame Season 5 was perhaps its use of social media i.e,YouTube, Facebook and Twitter(@tuskerlager-my tip next time use  a twitter handle commensurate to the show and not a brand name) to engage the viewers in real time conversations. Selling a brand via social media adheres to different rules as opposed to traditional media. The majority users being the youth want a buzz not a corporate trying to sell them something in such an open manner.

According to the website Hashtracking.com the #tpf5 generated a massive over 70,000 impressions within 24 hours reaching over 56K people indicating the online buzz on the show was gigantic. Samsung Kenya also hyped the show by introducing tablets both in the show performances and in coordinating student tasks during their stay at the Tusker academy. That was significant progress and improvement as compared to past competitions.

TPF & The Future:

The challenge for the organizers is to reinvent the show and take it to a whole new level in the next season. One place that needs to be re-engineered perhaps is the modus operandi of the show ....the whole voting fiasco, the student tasks, the eviction shows to ensure the level of  unpredictability is hyped to a whole new level.Putting three or four contestants on probation each week as a way of eliminating week performers has now been surpassed by time! Re think the concept!

The organizers should also  re model the website....requiring users to input their age, country of origin and subscribe to terms and conditions takes out the beauty of having anything online, unless your website belongs to the r-rated category, that option should have long been discarded. The website also needs prompt updating, live streaming,visual-graphic appeal  and other antics that the internet nowadays offers!

REGULATORS LYRICS ;Tribute to Nate Dogg !

LYRICS TO THE SONG : REGULATE (Warren G & Nate Dogg -1994)
NATE DOGG ( BORN: 19/08/1969 DIED: 15/03/2011)
If there is a song by Nate Dogg and Warren G that i really liked;this one tops the list(i know some of you feel me!!!) , so in memory of Nate Dogg who recently died of Stroke on Tuesday 22 March 2011 i reprint the lyrics .

Regulators Mount Up !

Warren G:
Regulators
We regulate any stealing of his property
And we're damn good too
But you can't be any geek off the street,
Gotta be handy with the steel if you know what I mean, earn your keep!
REGULATORS!!! MOUNT UP!

Warren G:
It was a clear black night, a clear white moon
Warren G was on the streets, trying to consume
Some skirts for the eve, so I can get some funk
Just rollin in my ride, chillin all alone

Nate Dogg:
Just hit the Eastside of the LBC
On a mission trying to find Mr. Warren G.
Seen a car full of girls ain't no need to tweak
All you skirts know what's up with 213

Warren G:
So I hooks a left on the 21 and Lewis
Some brothas shootin dice so I said "Let's do this"
I jumped out the ride, and said "What's up?"
Some brothas pulled some gats so I said "I'm stuck."

Nate Dogg:
Since these girls peepin me I'ma glide and swerve
These hookers lookin so hard they straight hit the curb
Won'tcha think of better things than some h**** tricks
I see my homey had some suckas all in his mix

Warren G:
I'm gettin jacked, I'm breakin myself
I can't believe they taking Warren's wealth
They took my rings, they took my rolex
I looked at the brotha said "Damn, what's next?"

Nate Dogg:
They got my homey hemmed up and they all around
Ain't none of them seeing if they going straight pound for pound
They wanna come up real quick before they start to clown
I best pull out my strap and lay them busters down

Warren G:
They got guns to my head
I think I'm going down
I can't believe this happenin in my own town
If I had wings I would fly
Let me contemplate
I glanced in the cut and I see my homey Nate

Nate Dogg :
Sixteen in the clip and one in the hole
Nate Dogg is about to make some bodies turn cold
Now they droppin and yellin
It's a tad bit late
Nate Dogg and Warren G had to regulate

I laid all them busters down
I let my gat explode
Now I'm switching my mind back into freak mode
If you want skirts sit back and observe
I just left a gang of those over there on the curb

Warren G:
Now Nate got the freaks
And that's a known fact
Before I got jacked I was on the same track
Back up back up cause it's on
N A T E and me
The Warren to the G

Nate Dogg:
Just like I thought
They were in the same spot
In need of some desperate help
The Nate Dogg and the G-child
Were in need of something else
One of them dames was sexy as hell
I said "ooo I like your size."
She said "my car's broke down and you seem real nice,
Would ya let me ride?"
I got a car full of girls and it's going real swell
The next stop is the Eastside Motel

Warren G:
I'm tweaking
Into a whole new era
G-Funk
Step to this
I dare ya
Funk
On a whole new level

Nate Dogg:
The rhythm is the bass and the bass is the treble

Warren G:
Chords
Strings
We brings
Melody
G-Funk
Where rhythm is life
And life is rhythm

Nate Dogg:
If you know I´ll got know
You don't wanna step to this
It's the G-Funk era
Funked out with a gangsta twist
If you smoke like I smoke
Then you high like everyday
And if your ass is a buster
213 will regulate

Reggae Maestro Gregory Isaac is Dead !

Iconic Reggae maestro Gregory Isaac died  on 25 October, 2010 at the age of 59 from Lung cancer in a London hospital. The legendary and talented singer will be remembered for his cool mellow voice and lovely reggae tunes the likes of " Night Nurse" "Substitute This" etc. Gregory Isaac's tunes were a favourite for me while growing up and cannot help but condole with the family and the millions perhaps even billions of fans that the Reggae Icon Gregory Isaac had.

His music and song lyrics are hardly irreplaceable but of good note is that Gregory Isaacs music will live on even after his death! This year the "Night Nurse" finally meets his rest.

Night Nurse Lyrics

Tell her try your best jest to make it quick
Whom attend to the sick
'Cause there must be something she can do
This heart is broken in two
Tell her it's a case of emergency
There's a patient by the name of Gregory

Night nurse
Only you alone can quench this Jah thirst
My night nurse, oh gosh
Oh the pain it's getting worse

I don't wanna see no doc
I need attendence from my nurse around the clock
'Cause there's no prescription for me
She's the one, the only remedy

Night nurse
Only you alone can quench this Jah thirst
My night nurse

I don't wanna see no doc
I need attendence from my nurse around the clock
'Cause there's no prescription for me

TPF 2009 : Alpha Rwirangira Brings Down The House

Last nights show in the much famed East African Reality Tv Show Tusker Project Fame 2009 was real exhilarating ;the contestants in the musical academy were each performing their own original composition and perhaps for the first time the show uncovered a real African Reggae superstar who is destined for success while still in the house!

Alpha Rwirangira of Rwanda
sang a swahili/rwandese song that encouraged africans never again to have a repeat of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide! The song entitled "tusikubali " left the attendants at the show and by extension all listeners completely entertained and received a standing ovation from the judges, teachers and audience. It was a masterpiece , a marvelous song that should have the UN and other international organizations poaching for it to be used in campaigning against social apathy, hatred, ethnicity, gender violence, wars, genocide and other social atrocities that continue to encumber the African continent.

Alpha Rwirangira is star of his won right , deserves this post and positive recommendation! On the other hand Kenyan songstress Patricia Wangechi Kihoro threw wood by choosing a genre of songs.i.e neosoul that has too many western greats that it requires exceptional talent to cut a niche for oneself. Her song had too much of Erykah Badu and India Arie influences and was lacklustre in performance leaving the Judges marginally impressed. On the otherhand the Ugandan Ladies Maureen and Leah definately had songs with international appeal and strong African tones that can readily cut for them a niche in the international music market in a similar manner as has Angelique KidjoSuzzana Owiyo... etc

Beverley Knight "100% "New Music Album

If you are a lover of Neo-Soul & RnB then watch out for this new sensation Beverley Knight dubbed the 'British Queen of Soul' as she kicks out a bevy of extremely delightful neo soul music. And to create a buzz out of her talent Beverley Knight offers you a free download of one of her latest tunes 'Every Step' in the soon to be released new album entitled"100%" set to be released on 14th September, 2009 ! I listened to the track as we were driving to Kisumu this weekend to bury a colleague and the track was real mellow, lovely tunes".For more details you can check out her website @www.beverleyknight.com/

Interestingly this will be the 5th album to be released by this 1973 British born singer, producer and songwriter ! That just goes to show how little of extremely good neo soul gets to receive good airplay down here in Africa!Im impressed by her level of achievements as indicated in this wikipedia article.

Beverley Knight is a Musical Super Star of African Origin. Kudos and here is a You-Tube video of her song "Beautiful Night" to be featured in the new album!

Cold Play's -Viva La Vida Song Lyrics

I love the music group Cold Play so much and their latest Multiple 2009 Grammy Award Winning song " Viva La Vida" is so motivational! Im certain the song will be a theme song of many teams in next years 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Here are the lyrics coupled with a Youtube video of the song" Viva La Vida" By Coldplay, my son loves it too at only 2 years of age!

LYRICS:' VIVA LA VIDA'
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemys' eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead, long live the king"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Michael Jackson is Dead!

The curtain has finally come down on the legendary pop singer Michael Jackson who died yesterday night (at 10:42 p.m Kenyan time) of cardiac arrest in a Los Angeles Hospital . The news has been met with a lot of grief worldwide since all the singers songs were basically hits that shapped the lifestyle, dressing, talk, fashion, entertainment of atleast three generations the World over!Fans have met the news with disbelief with many of them wiling and grieving in groups at times square in New York and Harlem.

Unfortunately the grave is the home of all mankind and the"Thriller" star has just preceeded many of us. But we certainly appreciate the music he churned. But in his death care must be taken not to idolize him nor worship him as he was not a god but just a man who entertained well! The media is now full of the news, playing his songs, reliving his memories... etc and it is understandably so because he was a hit!Attention will now turn to his death and funeral arrangements.

African Bloggers have picked up the news with the following comments:

Imod.co.za states"What terrible news. Despite the on going stabs at MJ, he really was exceptionally talented and produced songs, which we’ll never forget. Don’t even get me started on his dancing!"

Socialyz States"The King is Dead, long live the King!!Villified and ridiculed in later life, the end has come, my life would never have been the same without him.Michael Jackson is dead.Long LIVE the KING."

Two Kenyan Bloggers Tamaku and Simon Kitururu
have posted photos and videos of the Legend MJ.

Wyclef Jean Latest Single Download

Avid fans of Musician Wyclef Jean can download his latest singles; Mr Autotune featuring Mariah Careys husband Nick Cannon, More Bottles faturing Timbaland and We made it produced by the runners at his official blog Wyclef Jean Blog. It is indeed interesting to know that he actually keeps a blog.

American Idol Contestant Adam Lambert: Hot On Twitter

America is justafixed on this guy, he is the hottest searched for word in twitter and a finalist contestant on the latest series of the American Idol 2009 (season 8).According to the Huffington Post the legendary singer Paula Abdul was short of prematurely calling him the winner of the competition after he seductively crooned the song "Feeling Good," which has been famously sung by Nina Simone and Sammy Davis Jr.For a complete biography of Adam Lambert( born on 29,January, 1982) you may want to read the wikipedia stub

But what is certainly generating hype around the guy apart from his startling and talented perfomances is that "HE IS PRESUMED TO BE GAY " and that is just what may spark a controversy for some peple. The website votefortheworst has certainly picked it up (gross photos)! Among famous people who have arisen from the reality tv competition include Past winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and David Cook who have developed illustrous singing careers. For now the spot light is on Adam Lambert and the media are upon him because of his gay icon status!

Finding/Shopping for Kenyan Music Online

Finding or shopping for the different genres of Kenyan music online seems to be a husstle yet more than ever before many reputable and succesful artists in the world are now selling their music online. I engaged in an exercise to find credible and reputable sites where one can get to download either Kenyan, Ugandan or Tanzanian modern, hip hop, R & B , Blues etc and from the search engines.I came up with a few credible sites which i may wish to share(though if you choose to purchase music from this online stores its at your own discretion, no warranty is hereby implied).

  • The most authoritative and local website that you should first visit is KenTunes.COM, This is the premier site for Kenyan Music online. The downloads are in MP3 format and include the top/best Kenyan artistes in the following genres: Afro Fusion, Afro Jazz, Benga, Contemporary folk, folk, Gospel, Rumba, Soukous, Urban , and compilations
  • Closely rivalring Kentunes is Kentubes.com, but somebody needs to do something about the revolving phonograms, they are unsightly!
  • Another interesting site with a wide selection(if you are a Genge, Kapuka, etc Fan) is at the site musicvideos.the-real-africa.com, among artists featured are Wyre the Love Child,Redsan, Refigah, Amani, GidiGidi Maji Maji, Ukoo Fulani, Kenge Kenge etc .The site also has listings for official website for most prominent Kenyan Music artists, their MySpace profiles... etc
  • I found this online radio site Mtaafm to be also particurlarly interesting for free streaming mp3 music. Truth be told i hardly knew most of the artists on the site,
  • Rap Artists like Nonini, Jua Cali have their site/myspace profiles where you can download music at a fee
  • If you are interested in traditional african Music the Likes of Kayamba Africa, Isukuti, Nyatiti, Coasterian, Giriama, Maasai, Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Mwomboko etc then this website has perhaps more listings: audiosparx.com
  • International Sites such as Amazon.Com have a limited listing and most of the albums are pretty old, but if you are the type that is interested in Ayub Ogada(En Maya Kuoyo CD),Safari Sound Band,David Nzomo etc this is your site.
  • Want free reggae mixtape/cd tunes, all you need is rappidshare connection and BlackSupremacy Entertainment website is your site .
