CCK readies for Phase one of analog signal switch off

Initial trial for digital television is complete, paving way for the biggest shake up in terrestrial TV viewing

Nairobi, 23rd October 2013… The government has today announced December 13th as the date that the analogue signal will be turned off in Nairobi and its’ environs, commencing the first phase of the switch to digital television.
CCK Director General with Cabinet Secretary for ICT together with Smart Joker and Principal Secretary ICT
Under this phase, the areas of and around Nairobi County, Kiambu County, Ngong, Ongáta Rongai, Kitengela, Isinya, Kajiado, Athi River, Machakos and Thika will go live followed by  Mombasa, Malindi, Nyeri, Meru, Kisumu, Webuye, Kisii, Nakuru and Eldoret  in phase two  (30th March 2014)  and the final phase for the rest of the regions by 30th June 2014.
“Under the scheme the country will receive more than 40 free to air (FTA) high-definition channels, thanks to expanded channel capacity. The digital platform will make it possible to accommodate more broadcast content, therefore widening the consumers’ choice of viewership. The switch to digital broadcasting will mean more vibrant television viewing as more channels become available on the platform”, Said Dr.Fred Matiang’i – ICT Secretary.
Digital broadcasting is expected to cover at least 80% of the Kenyan population, bringing access to digital television and marking the end of the analog transmission technology.
“The digital platform will not only create more TV choice for consumers but also free up vital capacity that will avail a variety of enhanced broadcasting applications, multimedia data and entertainment services, providing a more efficient use of the country’s broadcasting frequencies”, Said Mr. Francis Wangusi - Director General, CCK.

An estimated 1.2 Million households have analogue television sets. More than 566,000 of these households in Nairobi and its environs currently have access to digital channels via the various modes of transmission, leaving slightly over 700,000 in need of migration to the digital platform before the switch-off deadline.
“In an effort to fastrack the migration process, the government has approved over 45 set-top box models for use in the country and eliminated duty on the same to encourage more Kenyans to purchase the gadget and access it more easily”, said Dr.Matiang’i
Digital transmission is poised to bring to the viewers picture clarity, sound access, availability of more channels and signal strength widening the reach of television services to all parts of the country.
“Consumer education on the migration process is necessary to give information about the acquisition of the set top boxes.  The phased approach to the switch off will give us sufficient time to pre-test the signal strength before the final national switch-off. By phasing out the process, the experience generated from the Nairobi switch off will inform decisions on how to switch the entire country to digital broadcasting”, added Mr. Wangusi.

The Country’s digital signal was launched in December 2009 and has since seen the regulator set an ambitious target for the country to fully migrate by June 30th 2014, ahead of the 17th July, 2015 global deadline- a universal undertaking set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Digital broadcasting carries more channels, which is hoped to give investors a window to acquire content provision licenses that have been limited under the current analogue regime due to unavailability of spectrum.  The release of spectrum from the digital dividend will enable more services to be deployed.

ZUKU TV LAUNCHES IN UGANDA

Kampala, Uganda 22nd September- Zuku TV, the Wananchi Group flagship brand has announced an ambitious plan to register 100,000 subscribers in Uganda within a two year period. This announcement was made by the Wananchi Group CEO, Richard Bell during the launch of the pay TV service in Uganda on Thursday. The Wananchi Group owns Zuku TV.

Having gone through a successful soft launch and setting in place an elaborate countrywide distribution and customer service network, Zuku Chief Executive Officer Richard Bell announced that the firm was confident that it will attain the subscription goal within the first two years.

“Zuku has been very well received in Uganda so far and considering the pipeline of exciting content that we have lined up to offer, we are confident to reach more than one hundred households within twenty four months,” he said during the official launch.

Zuku TV is ramping up Ugandan distribution by boosting the team of resellers with additional agents that will complement the Simba Telecom outlets. “We successfully completed a training module for 150 agents today who will work closely with our partners Simba Telcom and installation team to deliver the product to your doorstep and provide after sales support,” he explained.

He explained that Zuku was uniquely positioned in this market as a truly dedicated African service made by Africans for Africa. “For the first time in the history of Uganda’s film and television industry, the local producers and creative writers have a platform to showcase their work not just for audiences in Uganda but across ten eastern African countries,” he noted.

Zuku is also set to put significant investment into local content across Uganda and have already kicked off by screening the popular locally produced drama series, ‘Hostel’ in all it’s territories after acquiring the rights to broadcast it. Kenyans will now be able to watch Ugandan content and Ugandans will be able to watch Kenyan content.

He added that Zuku had established that the combination of growing middle-class, burgeoning local film industry, a great thirst for quality local & international entertainment and about 14 million TV households made this a highly attractive market for the affordable quality pay TV service.

“Survey statistics place the total national pay television penetration at less than 5% reflecting the market opportunity is therefore huge and the onus is on all of us to work together with the industry to create and produce great local content. Zuku will provide the platform for showcasing it,” added Bell.

He noted that Zuku had addressed the electrification challenge in the region and taken lack of grid electricity into account by bringing into the market decoders that can be run by a simple used car battery. “This demonstrates that we have a product for everyone whatever their geographical location.”

Following the official launch Zuku TV is set to take Uganda by storm, filling a yawning market gap for affordable quality home entertainment that is suitable for everyone.

The Ugandan launch forms part of a greater plan by the Wananchi Group to roll out in the three East African countries by the end of the year. Zuku was first launched in Kenya, the company’s headquarters and the company now has its sights set on capturing the populous Tanzanian market.

SHUGA SEASON 2: Shuga Returns To Kenya

Created with flickr slideshow from softsea.

Nairobi, 21 June 2011: MTV Networks Africa, The Staying Alive Foundation, PEPFAR and the Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (HFG) are to renew their ongoing partnership to produce the second series of hard-hitting sex-and-relationships, HIV and AIDS drama, Shuga, in Kenya. The initiative, funded extensively by the U.S. Government through PEPFAR, will work closely with the Government of Kenya to ensure the programme fits within Kenya’s existing HIV prevention strategy.

Series two, subtitled “Love, Sex, Money”, and associated digital, events and marketing activity will be supported by HFG Global and HFG’s Kenya office through their brand,

The new series will be expanded from three to six episodes and develop the complex emotional storylines first explored in Shuga.   Principle photography for the series goes into production in Nairobi in August 2011 and will premier on Valentine’s Day 2012 (14 February) and broadcast around.

The predominantly Kenyan cast for Shuga: Love, Sex, Money will be announced in July 2011.  The series will introduce new characters and storylines while additionally endeavouring to motivate and realize specific changes in sexual behaviours.  Among the issues likely to be explored in Shuga: Love, Sex, Money are HIV testing, stigma, condom use, gender inequity and the role of multiple concurrent partnerships in driving the HIV epidemic.
First aired in Kenya in November 2009 on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and terrestrial stations Citizen TV, KTN, NTV and KBC Channel One, Shuga reached viewers in 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and more than 70 TV stations worldwide.  It continues to be widely viewed in countries such as Zambia, South Africa and Jamaica, among others, together with a facilitator’s guide for peer educators to engage young people in open discussions and to motivate behaviour change.

The global success of Shuga as a vehicle for HIV and AIDS messaging for youth consumption was undeniable. In May 2010, Shuga won a prestigious Gold award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg, Germany in the “Public Relations: Health” category, for its vivid and uncompromising focus on love, emotions and sexual behaviour amongst Kenyan youth.

Shuga had a profound impact on the attitudes of Kenyan youth,” commented Lydia Murimi, Country Director, HFG Kenya. “Research conducted by Johns Hopkins University/Centre for Communications Programs reported increased intentions for HIV testing, decreased intentions for multiple sex partners, improved attitudes towards people living with HIV and AIDS and increased usage of accessible health and social services among the youth. We hope to be able to replicate that with the sequel as well as introduce new elements that will emerge from our youth studies.”

Georgia Arnold, Senior Vice President, Executive Director, Staying Alive Foundation commented, “Shuga showed the world that drama and public health messages can work together to effect genuine attitudinal change. Shuga: Love, Sex, Money will build on this foundation to generate real behavioural change in sexual health while also entertaining and engaging youth audiences.”
Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa said: “We have been overwhelmed by the positive reception that Shuga has received in Africa and around the world.  This has been an incredible award-wining campaign for us that has proven to be changing young people’s attitudes towards HIV and AIDS. We are excited about the opportunity to continue the series with the objective of reaching more and more people.”

The first series of Shuga was filmed in Kenya in August-September 2009.  Starring a young cast of upcoming Kenyan actors and actresses, Shuga told a bitter-sweet tale of love, loss, sex, heartbreak and relationships, set in the clubs, bars, campuses and hangouts of contemporary Nairobi. With a raw and uncut view on the lives of sexually active young Kenyans, Shuga spot lit the risks associated with unprotected sex and the party-hard lifestyles of urban Kenyan youth, told through the interlinked tales of characters Ayira (Lupita Nyongo), Ty (Pepe Haze), Felix (Tumisho Masha), Violet (Sharon Olago), Skola (David Omwange), Sindi (Valerie Kimani), Leo (Nicholas Mutuma), Kennedy (Antony Mwangi) and Virginia (Eva Kanyang'onda).

Davis Ntare Wins Tusker Project Fame 4

Breaking News yet once again Uganda carries the trophy!Davis Hillary Ntare of Uganda has emerged the winner of the reality tv music competition Tusker Project Fame 4! Davis win was well deserved as comparably the second runners up Tanzanian Msechu's style of singing closely resembled a Kidum the musician clone .It is however notable that his final lackluster performance of the renowned Michael Jackson's hit song "Billy Jean" was bellow par however it is his consistency in the Tusker Project Fame  Music academy that perhaps beguiled the viewers to vote for him.

This was the second time that Davis was having a go at the academy and he clearly demonstrated that the Judges should have considered him a worthy candidate the first time.

The teary David who was emotionally overwhelmed at the feat walks away with a prize money of Kenya Shillings Five Million and a recording contract with Gallo records. The question however remains, unlike past winners will Davis Ntare leave a mark/illustrious career after the win or fade back in the background as has been the case of past winners in this reality TV talent search music show?Time will tell.

But without doubt Judge Ian will have a tough time this time ,judging from the auditions without good technical knowledge on singing he is a goner! The new contestants are refined and have upped their game. I say this with specific focus on the Rwandese contestant Nina Bola who sung with impeccable french...quite a performance!

Nina Bola is star yet to rise!

    !!

Its good to see talent bubble forth but i hope there will be no Hemedi comedy this time, just music being nurtured however Nganga seems to be the in house comedian. Keep it locked!(PHOTOS COURTESY OF TUSKER PROJECT FAME 3 WEBSITE)

1ST Eviction Show: Sunday 30th August, 2009: Kelvin of Tanzania was evicted ,Nina Bola was unfairly put on probation a second time whereas Ngangalito survived .But not for too long...

2nd Eviction Show: Saturday 5th September, 2009 : Caroline Uliwa of Tanzania was deservedly evicted.

3rd Eviction Show: Saturday 12th September, 2009: Nina Bola of Rwanda was wrongfully evicted whereas the untalented Ngang'a of Kenya continues to joy ride in the house.

4th Eviction Show: Saturday 19th September, 2009:Illuminata Rwelamira of Tanzania and Christian Rwirangira of Rwanda were evicted. Ngangalito survived...i still wonder why! Debarl is on probation ,he chose a wrong song and is obsessed with his dance steps and image projection to the detriment of his singing.I am beginning to feel this contest is a Kenyan affair as usual.
For Fairness the next season should be hosted in a different Country. The audience voting system seems tilted to favour the host Country!

5th Eviction Show:Saturday 26 September, 2009: Kenyan Debarl Inea is evicted by strategy, the female contestants including Patricia voted him out to ensure that as a stiff contender/competition for the grand prize he is out of the way to their suprise Alpha Rwirangira of Rwanda has emerged a star in his own right.Africa's next great reggae maestro.Kudos Alpha i would buy your album anytime.

6th Eviction Show: Faced with the dificult task to choose the6th Evictee Alpha Chose to save Maureen thereby by default Leah Atute became the 6th contestant to Leave the academy. Now all the students are on probation.

CNN AfricanVoices with Bank PHB

In my program review and round up i bumped on a program that i believe should receive maximum interest from all persons interested and concerned with the development of Africa as a continent in its various spheres of life. The CNN Show 'African Voices' sponsored by the rapidly expanding Pan African Bank PHB showcases the best of Africa nad features interviews with Africa's legendary personalities such as Angelique Kidjo, Chinua Achebe, Eric Wainana,Mo Ibrahim etc.

I managed to watch the show on Eric Wainana under the theme voice of the voiceless where he expounded on his campaign to higlight social ills and empower change through music was qute insightful.Last sundays edition featured legendary and talented Nigerian Author Chinua Achebe who made our secondary school literary experience a delightful experience. The show is airing a side of Africa and the greatness of African people in a way that was previously little known or sometives given little attention in the developed World. Simply put the show is a must watch. Sundays program airs on CNN at around 8-10 a.m and it quite insightful. So to catch up on Africa's greatest personalities i suggest: watch the show on CNN (Saturdays: 12.30 and 21.30 GMT Sundays: 18.00 GMT)

Carole Mandi's Sebuleni Show Feaures Shiatsu Expert

Last Sundays Sebuleni talk show hosted by the reknowned Nation Media/ True Love magazine editor Carole Mandi featured Filligona Ochola Kenya;s first visually impaired Shiatsu expert and was quite a moving story on overcoming all odds. The Talk show Sebuleni airs on NTV network on Sunday at 6.00 p.m and its a womans talk show thats simply inspiring ,moving and captivationg!

The show is a must watch and features moving stories that feature issues at heart to the feminine gender and my take: Carole Mandi has matured in the way she hosts the show with ettiquette, style and presence that is currently unmatched in the Country's female hosted talk shows! What perhaps was intriguing in last weeks show was how Filligona surmounted various obstacles inorder to practise her skill and how she has continued to attract a steady stream of clientelle interested in this oriental technique!

Shiatsu literally means " finger pressure" and it is a highly developed form of deep massage /holistic therapy employed by lincesed shiatsu experts("Shiatsupractor"). Depending on its nature ... Shiatsu may range from a physical ,mental to a spiritual technique. Hence based on ones beliefs one must carefully or rather conscientiously consider whether to submit to the technique as a form of treatment(Disclaimer: this blog does not endrse any form of medical treatment but simply states events and opinions as it deems fit)!

Well i hope to catch up more on the show as it continues to accomplish its agenda!

Here is a past edition of the show!

Joyce Akinyi, Anthony Chinedu Soap Drama( Season 2)

The Joyce Akinyi, Anthony Chinedu days of our lives soap drama season 2 is back with a bang after a six months hiatus! The former couples (now pursuing divorce proceedings)were at it again at Deep West restaurant both claiming ownership and their tussle made main news both on prime tv and here at Nairobians perspective! My oh My... the two seem not to mind airing their dirty linen in public when granted an opportunity. Their affair, divorce proceedings etc are a perfect script for a sellot movie from Kenya's riverwood or Nigerian nollywoood ,and their will be no shortage of cast.
My take on the issue is that Chinedu is a smart man ! He knows Akinyi's disposition and is playing her to reveal her weaknesses! He was quiet and composed playing the rational man when Akinyi almost accosted him right in front of the camera's! Someone needs to advise her...all the mama drama is not good for her image, case... etc.Play it smart.

Joyce Akinyi just recently jetted into the Country after 6 months imprisonment alongside former assistant minister Raphael Wanjala( main cast) for failing to declare Kshs 7.5 million in their possesion on a recent flight and entry to India. According to the Standard Newspaper she claims that it was the intervention of former Minister Raphael Tuju that secured their release on bail. Indian authorities are investigating the money and its intended use and somewhere in there the D#*$ word is being used.
