Lake Turkana Wind Turbine Farm-Loiyangalani

Green Energy, Clean energy is no longer an alternative but a choice. I was pleased to recently visit Loiyangilani District in South Hor ,Turkana /Marsabit County and witness the  single largest private investment in Kenya’s history, The Lake Turkana Wind Power Project( LTWP)  a wind power harnessing project using large turbines  in  a stretch estimated to cover 162 square kilometers.

The wind farm is expected to  provide 310MW  low cost wind power to Kenya’s national grid, equivalent to approximately 18 per cent of the country’s current installed electricity generating capacity. The project will comprise 365 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 kW .

Most important though is the socioeconomic and environmental impact to the communities living along this arid/semi-arid region.for one, due to the project previously impassable ,rough terrain dirt roads have now been leveled and  murram added making the almost 200 km drive from Laisamis to the interior somewhat tolerable.

Communication infrastructure is slowly improving due to the contractors on site necessitating the installment of cell phone masts. It is obvious that this is changing the fortunes of the communities that were previously neglected.

What was perhaps disconcerting is that cattle rustling is still carried out between the Samburu and Turkana communities. But with this infrastructure projects coming up,economic growth and the exposure that results it is hoped that  such things will soon be history as community efforts are directed to other activities. It is also important to note, that cattle rustling or insecurity is not the main story of this region. The communities have existed and flourished in peace for many decades, unfortunately its selective media that only highlights the troubles of the region and forgets the good. Indeed if it bleeds it leads mantra has created a negative connotation for many regions and as Africans we know how unjust that can be.

With roads, infrastructure, electricity and supporting businesses  , this is the area to watch. Much of its potential is still untapped. Just driving up the road we were able to see a lot of wildlife for free...Ostriches,Giraffes,Gazelles,Antelopes, Oryx, Hyena's...etc.As the photos show Turkana is a beautiful place with beautiful people and it is projects such as the above that will expose this beauty to the outside world.

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead -Kenyans Celebrate!

Kenyans have awoken this morning (coincidentally on a public holiday) to the News that Osama Bin Ladden is Dead the Mastermind behind the August 7th 1998 ,Nairobi USA Embassy bombings that left over 200 Kenyans dead and scores injured and maimed(see embedded YouTube Video of President Barrack Obama's announcement of Bin Ladens Death)! The Terror kingpin was killed in a well coordinated move carried out allegedly by American Navy seals that resulted in a firefight and the death of Osama Bin Laden's son.

That essentially is good news and there is a sense of jubilation and  retribution duly seved especially on Social Media as many bloggers and tweeps tweeting in their approval of his demise.Where was Osama Killed at? Interestingly Osama Bin Laden was killed not in Tora Borra Mountains in Afghanistan but in Abbotabad a cosy up market  mansion/house near the Pakistani Capital Islamabad .Ironically those who do bad live in luxury while their foot soldiers brave horrid conditions with untold zeal and fevour.

Interestingly it has taken Obama(whose father was a native Kenyan) to nail Osama ! The Kenyan Television stations are now running Al Jazeera and CNN live feeds in recognition that this event has much significance to the Kenyan people who have been on the receiving end of several Al Qaeda cordinated terrorist attacks including the initial 1998 US Embassy bombings in Nairobi.

On an international note many pundits will be evaluating this developments and its significance in American Politics and President Barrack Obama's re-election bid.At the same time Osama's death obviously will not have the cure it effect of Al Qaeda induced terrorism but it is a significant step in stemming like minded individuals .

A Pakistani techie Sohaib Athar who tweets @ReallyVirtual managed to live tweet the event as the American Helicopters hovered above his residence in Abbotabad unbeknown to him at the time that Osama bin Laden was the target of the noise. You may just find his timeline pretty interesting.

Mombasa Road Accidents : Petitioning Nairobi City Council

Have you ever lost a friend ,relative ,colleague ,workmate on Mombasa Road ?(i know i have) Then the following petition should have a personal appeal to you.Kindly sign up and tweet on the petition Construct 5 pedestrian footbridges on Mombasa Road , .The petition can be found at GoPetition.Com

The petition reads:

Background (Preamble):
The sections of Mombasa Road between Capital Centre and Parkside Towers (Zain), and between General Motors and the Nakumatt Embakasi junction have consumed the lives of many pedestrians over the years. While authorities have put up signs asking motorists to slow down, the carnage continues unabated.

With every death on this road is a family left behind mourning in pain, dreams and aspirations suddenly brought to a brutal end, and a bright, promising future destroyed.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, petition the City Council of Nairobi to construct 5 pedestrian footbridges at the following locations along Mombasa Road: Oil Libya in South C, Parkside Towers, General Motors, the Imara Daima junction and the Nakumatt Embakasi Junction.

Because footbridges with solid concrete slabs on the sides many times provide hide-outs for street families, posing a security challenge for pedestrians and discouraging their use, we petition that these new footbridges have metal grills on the sides so that the goings-on on the footbridges can be visible to all.

For the same reason, we ask that no advertising billboards be erected on the sides of these footbridges to obscure them from the public. Finally, we petition that these footbridges be well-lit at night for ease of use by pedestrians even in darkness.
Kindly sign up and spread the word, blog, tweet ,share. like on Facebook etc so that we can get the critical mass to effect change. Seeing accidents day in and day out and doing nothing about it will not change anything. We must hold the public authorities tasked with our safety accountable and demand they accomplish their mandate after all we do pay taxes .

Nestea: Nestle's New Flagship to the Beverage Market

(Pierre Trouilhat, Head of Nestlé Equatorial African Region, Natasha Metto, Reigning Miss World Kenya, Guenter Spiess, Business Executive Manager-Coffee and Beverages and Terry Mungai, Ashleys Hair and Beauty Salon,  hold cups of Nestea)
I am just from a Launch of Nestle new product "Nestea®" at the Norfolk Hotel Nairobi : a beverage sold in powder form in sachets that will retail at Kenya Shillings Five per sachet .The Nestea brand which is making its debut in Kenya has a market presence in over 60 Countries . It is popular in countries such as United States, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and China. The flavored drink made from Tea and other fruit flavors is easy to prepare and requires to be only mixed with hot or cold water and is ready for the taking.
(Natasha Metto and Pierre Trouilhat share a light moment)

Considering the price and the size of the sachets i had an interesting conversation with Nestle Equatorial African region business executive manager Guenter Spiess about environmental concerns on the packaging and he clarified:

  • Since the sachets are small and affordable to aid in collection and recycling Nestle will be launching competitions whereby users will be encouraged to retain the used sachets for redemption of a Nestea Pitcher Mug or entry into a raffle. I find that pretty cool.
  • The materials used are biodegradable hence there will be the least damage to the environment in instances where disposal is not effected in a proper manner.
Nestle's new product is set to rival the beverage market as the product is quality and can be taken as a soft drink. I am certain the biggest market share holder Coca Cola will not take this foray into its territory lying down.

I am also certain Coca Cola could hardly come up with a product of this caliber at that price for the mass market but i stand to be corrected. Kudos to Nestle for the quick thinking after all we all love Tea and it is one of our main cash crops and export product. Nestea is made from 100% Kenyan Tea which is a plus for the local Tea producers and farmers.Should the product grow to be popular Kenya will be the main beneficiary.

Here is excerpts from the Official Press Release:

NESTEA® enters Kenya with a bang!
NESTEA® announces sponsorship of NESTEA® Miss World Kenya 2011
Nairobi, February 25, 2011: NESTEA®, a ready-mix iced tea brand, has partnered with Miss World Kenya 2011 beauty pageant to promote consumption of tea in Kenya. Elaborating on the tie up Guenter Spiess, Business Executive Manager - Coffee & Beverages for Nestlé Equatorial African Region said, “Through NESTEA® we are promoting a beautiful and healthy lifestyle, NESTEA® Miss World Kenya 2011 is an opportunity for us to realize dreams of a lucky few young girls.”

In addition to the NESTEA® Miss World Kenya 2011 sponsorship, Mr Spiess also announced, “Once in a life time opportunity for a girl from less privileged background, who meets the criterion, to change her destiny by participating in Miss NESTEA® Kenya 2011, a contest which will be held during the ongoing NESTEA® Roadshow’s and the winner of which will get direct entry into the NESTEA® Miss World Kenya 2011. All they need to qualify for participation is five sachets of NESTEA® to enter this competition  and NESTEA® will take care of the rest. At Nestlé we are always looking to connect with our consumers and for NESTEA® we know this will be a great opportunity to connect at the grassroots level.”

Apart from the lemon and tropical flavors, NESTEA® has also added the apple variant to its range. The brand has introduced smaller single serve packs, now retailing at Ksh 5 which are readily available at all dukas and shopping malls. Speaking after the launch of NESTEA® Miss World Kenya 2011, Regional Head of Nestlé Equatorial Africa Region Pierre Trouilhat said, “This introduction of single serve packs are part of our overall strategy to reinforce Nestlé’s presence in emerging markets, with particular focus on the lower income consumer segments while always taking care of the nutrition element. NESTEA® is a family drink, where 2 glasses deliver an adults daily Vitamin C requirement for just Ksh 10 and I know it will appeal to all age groups.”

The trend currently in the most markets is that people tend to consume tea in the morning. NESTEA® aims to make consumption of tea ‘fashionable’ at any time of the day. NESTEA® ready-mix provides consumers with different flavours that can be enjoyed across the day as a refreshing and nutritious drink. Mr. Spiess elaborated and said even though tea consumption still tops the beverage markets there was need to diversify the product and make it an all-time drink.
The organiser of Miss World Kenya 2011 Mrs. Terry Mungai said the competition presented an equal opportunity for Kenyan girls from all backgrounds to make a difference and urged them to participate.
She said: “I would like to urge all Kenyan girls between the age group of 17-24 years and fulfilling the other criteria to come forward and participate in the NESTEA Miss World Kenya 2011.”

The Miss NESTEA® search will run between March and May 2011 and will be followed by the crowning of Miss NESTEA® Kenya.  The lucky winner will have a chance to enter into the NESTEA® Miss World Kenya semi finals with the full sponsorship of NESTEA® in terms of her attire and grooming.

Kimani Maruge Themed Movie "The First Grader "

The Kimani Maruge's life story themed movie "The First Grader" has evoked much ecstasy among its Kenyans fans ,however there is a twist of irony to the whole affair. The film which featured in this years Toronto Film Festival (September 9-19th)  has as part of its cast Hollywood actress Naomi Harris, Sam Feurer, Nick Reding and local media personalities and comedian  Daniel Ndambuki, actor  Oliver Litondo (playing the Lead Mr Maruge) Emily Njoki, Mumbi Kaigwa among others .

The film featured as a "British Film" whereas much of the cast, the location and the story line is Kenyan. The film was Directed by Justin Chadwick That is the irony -a local story that hardly merited any production venture from our myriads production houses but caught the eyes of our former colonial masters hence being retold by foreigners.

While ultimately this story of resilience  has caught more attention than it would have been had it been a local production ,the fact is that it was a story worth telling and perhaps we as a people never thought of seizing the opportunity of telling our own stories of triumph and victory over adversity. In fact the inspiration of the story Mr Kimani Maruge died in misery as an Internally Displaced person by virtue of the selfish interests that played out in Kenya's last general election.I am a firm believer that no one can tell an African story better than the Africans themselves yet we pass on many opportunities e.g Nelson Mandela's Movie(was a foreign production) ,we hardly have a movie on Wangari Maathai and other personalities whose story is worth mention.

According to IMDB the story line behind the movie is developed upon the 84 year old Kimani Maruge's desire to learn to read which inspires him to Join Primary School standard One(American equivalent: First Grade) a class alongside six year-olds. Together he and his young teacher face fierce resistance, but ultimately they win through - and also find a new way of overcoming the burdens of the colonial past.

Interestingly,"Kimani Maruge" enjoys a facebook fanpage courtesy of a fan with over 5,349 fans indicating its not only school that he joined- his story went past the Digital Divide. The only thing lacking as is common of Holywood hits is "The First Grader Movie Website"

Hail the mobile phone, for the best is yet to come(Press Release)

..Alien to many Kenyans only a decade ago, the device is now the signature tool of development
Nairobi, Kenya, September 2 2010: A few years ago election monitoring and reporting was a tricky, tiring and often thankless affair. Dealing with Kenya‘s elections processes in the last decade, in particular, has largely involved sending hordes of polling clerks, election observers and monitors, with paper files stashed in their underarms, to far-flung areas to help record the goings-on election and referenda. Apart from being slow, unreliable and erratic, such processes have proved risky for election officials especially if violence broke out.

But things are changing. Mobile phone technology is rapidly transforming the way these national and other crucial life-changing activities are carried out, bringing with it faster, reliable and credible relay of information from outlying areas.
Apart from elections reporting, the ubiquitous device, owned by nearly 20 million Kenyans, has also helped stem incidents of violence that have in the past rocked various parts of Kenya notably in 2007 elections. A lot depends on how transparent such processes as elections are but the mobile phone is taking a lion’s share of the contribution toward this positive change.

In a ground-breaking project in conjunction with the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC), Safaricom, Kenya’s largest network operator, the world’s leading mobile handsets-maker Nokia supplied over 18,000 Nokia 1680 phones to be used by the electoral body’s returning officers and clerks in various part of the country.
IIEC had picked Safaricom after, inviting Kenyan telecom operators for a partnership with it with the objective of running an efficient and credible referendum process.

“Key to this was information management with planned innovation of using mobile and fixed data infrastructure to transmit results quickly and cost effectively. Safaricom responded with a fully fixed and data proposition to meet this need. The mobile data solution included 3G modems and 18,000 Nokia 1680 handsets,” says Mr. Kenneth Oyolla General Manager, Nokia East and Southern Africa. The Nokia 1680 is one of the most affordable, internet-enabled mobile phones and boasts of a long battery life.

Safaricom then installed specific elements on the GPRS-enabled handsets including a customized application with a special interface for submitting results. It was a basic interface that has a ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ options for feedback. The phones were then installed with an Internet Protocol (IP) address- a numerical label that is assigned to devices and which helps to uniquely identify each device.

The phones were also installed with an access point name (APN) which enabled the phone used by every presiding officer to be authenticated as genuine when they relayed results electronically to the computers at the tallying centre. . As a result the IIEC was able to get timely feedback in its centre, hubbed at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi. By the time the clock ticked midnight of August 4 most of the results had had trickled from remote areas in Mandera and Malaba, near the border with Uganda.

“The sheer ubiquity of mobile phones is bringing with it one of the biggest leaps in history, in many spheres of our lives. Whether it’s the good, old text message or the new, snazzy features such as mobile chat- which are gaining huge popularity in Kenya and in Sub-Saharan Africa-the mobile phone is bound expand the possibilities. The revolution has just started,” says Mr Oyolla.

So what does the mobile phone revolution portend for people’s livelihoods? With progressively lower calling rates people are already interacting more on phone. In its latest quarterly report, covering January to March 2010, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) says the total number of mobile traffic grew by 19.9 per cent from 4.2 million minutes in the previous quarter to 5.1 million minutes. This represents a 118.6 percent increase, compared to the same period of the previous year.

At the end of the 2009, the penetration rate of mobile service had risen to 49.7 per 100 inhabitants. This compares favorably the world average of 49.8 per 100 inhabitants, as rated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), World Development Index 2009 from 2007 data. The recent tariff reductions by Kenyan mobile operators are destined to perk up these figures. Analysts say this is, potentially, good for the economy, with possibilities of people engaging in productive interactions such as seeking jobs, market-related requests and the like.

Soon, says Mr. Oyolla, mobile technology could play a significant role in detecting, mapping and responding to epidemics as happened in a recent polio outbreak in Kenya recently. With handset-makers like Nokia championing manufacture and use of low-priced, internet-enabled devices, players in the industry are expecting even more interactions on the mobile phone.

The mobile phone is already bringing unprecedented impact in other areas such as finance, education, health and environment. The talk of M-Pesa, revolutionary money transfer service pioneered by Safaricom, and a world’s first, has brought about ground breaking and positive effects to the Kenyan economy.

And in neighbouring Tanzania, Nokia is already providing technology leadership through Bridgeit locally known as Elimu kwa Teknolojia (Education through technology) in Tanzania using convergence as a platform for learning for children in developing economies, many of whom lack access to basic learning materials.

Mr Oyolla says the project, a multi-sectoral partnership with International Youth Foundation, the Tanzanian Ministry of Education and others, has brought about a “unique convergence of mobile telephony and satellite technology designed to deliver digital multimedia learning materials to teachers and students who otherwise would not have access to them. Plans are now well underway to kick this program off in Kenya before the end of the year.”

The mobile phone may have been alien to many Kenyans just a decade ago, but the socio-economic significance of this device might not meet its technological match in the next century.

Soul Boy the Movie -Premiere

The much acclaimed Kenyan Independent movie dubbed "Soul Boy" premiered on Saturday 6th of March 2010 in Kenya's sprawling slum 'Kibera'. The movie which recently won an award at the Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden has received a fair amount of media airplay even featuring on prime time news. Unfortunately the plot features a dalliance with a witchdoctor , a stereotype that often portrays  Africans as being overly mesmerized with the occult. For this i fault the movie. For a comprehensive Soul Boy movie review i find this Daily Nation Article insightful !

On the other hand without doubt the cinematography is not your usual cup of tea but quite an advancement in the region. Soul Boy was filmed by the Kenyan-Ghanaian Hawa Essuman in collaboration with the German director Tom Tykwer. The main cast in the movie is 14 year old Samson Odhiambo playing the character Abila and his Girlfriend Shiku played by Leila Dayan Opou  . To view the movie locally kindly visit the Silverbird website for the Soul Boy Showtime movie listing.

Who Owns What In Kenya-A Bold Expose!

In a bold and rather unprecedented move: Kenya's online ombudsman Mars Group Website has published the names of five prominent Kenyan politicians on allegations of Grand corruption and looting of public resources.

The Mars Kenya expose lists in detail who owns what, where, their business covers and associates. Whereas main stream media may not take such a bold step in matters which are largely within public knowledge; seeing that Kenya has outlandish laws both civil and criminal on defamatory matters. Mars group Kenya's gallant efforts are astounding. The expose comes complete with a slide show that is quite eye catchy.I admire the guts of Mwalimu Mati he has dared to go where the men refused to go....!

Esther Arunga Holds Out Her Own

Popular Television Anchor Esther Arunga formerly of Kenya Television Network yesterday held a press conference together with Music Maestro Joseph Hellon to counter accusations that she was holding herself in seclusion after allegedly joining a sect dubbed "Finger of God Church " headed by the said Mr Hellon. Mrs Arunga an advocate of the High Court of Kenya was visibly angered and promised to sue members of the 4th Estate for allegedly peddling rumors. Though formerly a Prime Time news anchor she has ended up being a Prime Time News item in all the mainstream media.

However her indifference as meted out on her former colleagues indicates that she too has so soon lost touch with reality in that threats of Civil suits has never deterred Journalists from pursuing stories that have much public interest.Being in the public domain is much costly and yes Miss  Esther Arunga  even a break up or a postponed wedding to Wilson Malaba is "juicy news" for the local paparazzi. The press conference will just fan the rumor mills to double speed. It is foolhardy to hold a press conference and latch out at the same merchants of information to peddle her side of the issue.

Her recent actions have left many including her family wondering whether she has come under "undue albeit sinister" influence ,thus the issue of the Church of Finger of God being dubbed "a cult".However on a preliminary it is not possible to conclude that the said church is a cult since no comprehensive investigations have been done at the same time mainstream religion which by themselves follow human edicts and leadership with almost fanatic zeal often dub emerging religions as cult. This often is an under belly tactic and does not hold. The blogosphere is now on to the story!

ESTHER ARUNGA UPDATE 2011....the internet site IzVipi   is carrying a story that Esther Arunga and his Husband Timberlake have openly declared their parting ways with Jazz maestro Joseph Hellon"Finger of God Church".The truthfulness of this revelations however has not yet been officially confirmed, hence the saga continues...!

Transparency International Corruption Perception Index 2009

Amidst a surging global economy, rising environmental challenges, poverty and food crisis ,corruption continues to pervade most human societies. This is revealed in the annual global corruption and country indices report prepared by Transparency international. The 2009 Transparency international Corruption Index released on Tuesday in Berlin,Germany indicates " that no region of the world is immune to the perils of corruption".

As usual this blog has always taken an interest in the corruption index and makes it a point to discuss the report on annual basis. In this years Corruption Index Kenya has improved with a point from 2008 where its corruption perception index was placed at 2.1 to 2.2 in 2009.Indicating that there has been some relative improvement. The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is used in  measuring the perceived level of public-sector corruption in 180 countries and territories around the world. The CPI is a "survey of surveys", based on 13 different expert and business surveys. The survey involved a random sampling of 3500 households between April and May 2009.

It is good to note that among public institutions that have drastically improved include the Kenya Ports Authorities and Private Universities. New entrants include the Ministry of Public Works, the National Hospital Insurance Fund(NHIF),the National Social Security Fund(NSSF) and the Teachers Service Commission. This revelation leaves many Kenyans worried as such institutions directly relate to their preset and future well being. The top 20 most corrupt institutions in East Africa(i.e Kenya Uganda and Tanzania) according to the report by rank were:
  • 1.Kenya Police
  • 2.Tanzania Police
  • 3.Ministry of Defence-Kenya
  • 4.Judiciary/Courts-Tanzania
  • 5.Uganda Police
  • 6.Immigration-Tanzania
  • 7.Uganda Revenue Authority
  • 8.Judiciary-Kenya
  • 9.Uganda Public Service
  • 10.Ministry of Defence-Uganda
  • 11.Ministry of Public Works-Kenya
  • 12.Northern Uganda Social Action Fund-Uganda
  • 13.Ministry of Lands-Kenya
  • 14.Judiciary-Uganda
  • 15.Nairobi City Council-Kenya
  • 16.Ministry of Labour-Kenya
  • 17.TANAPA-Tanzania Mombasa City Council-Kenya
  • 19.Mulago Hospital-Uganda
  • 20.Umeme-Uganda

Interestingly 90% of those surveyed in Kenya ranked Kenya as being between corrupt and extremely corrupt indicating why the fight against corruption should receive serious concerns for all of us.Since in essence corruption is carried out by individuals. As a lot Kenyans were seen as pessimistic as to whether corruption would decline in the next coming year.

In Africa  Botswana is placed a the least corrupt Country at 5.6 points followed by South Africa at 4.7 and and Namibia 4.5.    In East Africa Ethiopia is perceived as the Least corrupt in the Transparency internationals report followed by Tanzania. Sudan and Somalia are almost placed in the same margin which is quite an indictment. You can download the East Africa Bribery Index report(PDF)at the following link EABI LINK

American Meb Keflezighi Defeats Kenyans in the New York Marathon 2009

American Athlete Meb Keflezighi yesterday stunned the world by winning the 2009 New York Marathon at a time of  2 hours  9 minutes and15 seconds.Meb Keflezighi beat seasoned Kenyan marathoner Robert Cheruiyot by 41 seconds.Interestingly this is a first American win of the Marathon since 1982 and just indicates why this is great news for the American continent. The Eritrean born Meb Keflezighi was last year number two in the NY marathon and it seems he has definately upped his game.

On the other hand Kenyans back home are little pleased as this is their niche of play and the lack of a win was somehow disappointing. The women race however went to competitive African athlete Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia .

It seems Kenyan athletes will now have to brace themselves for stiff competition from Americans and not just Ethiopians and Eritreans since a number of the Americans finished in the top 10 bracket. But Kudos to Robert Cheruiyot there's always a next time as illustrated in Meb's story
