World Cup Tips:Safety & Security !

With less than 6 days and counting to the 2010 Fifa World Cup Kick off match in South Africa it is important to share some little tips with the world at Large.Over a billion eyes will be glued to the Television Screens all around the World to watch the World Cup Football finals .The eyes will watch with intense emotions, feelings ,loyalty, admiration, disdain ,hate and other emotions however my tip is we all need to remember "ITS JUST A GAME " .There will be losers and winners but that's the beauty of it.Its Just a Game.

Unfortunately while there is relatively calm in many homesteads now since the games have not begun ,much will change in 6 days time.Indeed unfortunately due to misplaced feelings some will die due to small arguments, misunderstandings ..etc all over a game of football. So now the viewers can prepare themselves emotionally and mental after all "the World cup is just a game".Cheer your team but respect the right of others to cheer theirs. Do not brawl or fight, yet you are not even a player and perhaps will never be.Maintain a sense of decorum, enjoy your drinks but remember after all "its just a game".

There is blog that over the years monitors the bizarre killings and deaths that result due to World Cup and the deaths are reported in each and every continent across various strata of society and social classes. You can read it at the following link  , Its quite unfortunate and quite preventable for these deaths to occur.Hence; a lot of self control and self discipline is required.

For those who will have traveled to South Africa, remember that the Country's crime rate is exceptionally high and that will not change ,no not even for this event.South Africa's 50 murders a day translate into 38.6 for every 100,000 citizens, compared to 0.88 in Germany, host of the last World Cup.Stay safe in this period do not become a crime statistic.

IRB Rugby Sevens -Las Vegas 2010( Kenya's Results)

Kenya bowed out gracefully after loosing to New Zealand in a score of 21-7 in the IRB Rugby  Sevens World series 2010 tournament semi finals played at  Sam Boyd Stadium USA ,Las Vegas. This is indeed without doubt an impressive performance by the national team Shujaa warriors. Kenya had vanquished England in the Quarter finals 26-21 points indicating that they are a feat to reckon with. What is perhaps impressive is that over 1,500 Kenyan supporters graced Las Vegas to support their team in the USA some actually flew from Kenya (the likes of Maina Kageni...) and the international  media got wind of it and were actually impressed.

The final results of the Las Vegas IRB series 201 which saw Samoa clinching the title and emerging winner in a score of 33-12 over New Zealand's Sevens Rugby team are indicated in the IRB website fixtures and results page.Kudos to the Shujaa team ....

Britain Denies Kenyan Fotballer MacDonald Mariga Work Permit

Popular Kenyan football stars MacDonald Mariga's dream to join Manchester City from Italian club Parma has been watered down after the British Government failed to grant him a Work Permit. The Article indicating this and appearing in British Website Mail Online has brought alot of dismay and disappointment to MacDonalds fans at home ...... The disappointing news is also being carried by the BBC website. Kenyan fans will definately lodge a protest at the UK Government handling of this case. Mac Donald Mariga would have been the first Kenyan to play for a major League football club in the United Kingdom

Manchester City Bids 10 Million Euro for Kenyan MacDonald Mariga

Perhaps the hottest news in the Kenyan sports arena is that top English Premier League football sports club Manchester City has bid 10 Million Euro for  the 23 year old Kenyan born Parma Midfielder MacDonald Mariga. If the transfer bid succeeds MacDonald Mariga will be the highest paid Kenyan sportsperson raking a sum of almost 10 Million Kenya Shillings  a week.MacDonald Mariga is part of the 'Golden Boys' League of former students of Nairobi's Kamukunji High School. Among other successful players from that school include Denis Oliech(Photo hereunder) who plays for the french team Auxerre.

News of the imminent MacDonald Mariga's transfer has been well received in Kenya. Unlike Dennis Oliech MacDonald Mariga has always avoided negative limelight with little being reported over his escapades, if any. MacDonald Mariga portrays a more positive  image for emulation from the youth unlike the latter.

American Meb Keflezighi Defeats Kenyans in the New York Marathon 2009

American Athlete Meb Keflezighi yesterday stunned the world by winning the 2009 New York Marathon at a time of  2 hours  9 minutes and15 seconds.Meb Keflezighi beat seasoned Kenyan marathoner Robert Cheruiyot by 41 seconds.Interestingly this is a first American win of the Marathon since 1982 and just indicates why this is great news for the American continent. The Eritrean born Meb Keflezighi was last year number two in the NY marathon and it seems he has definately upped his game.

On the other hand Kenyans back home are little pleased as this is their niche of play and the lack of a win was somehow disappointing. The women race however went to competitive African athlete Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia .

It seems Kenyan athletes will now have to brace themselves for stiff competition from Americans and not just Ethiopians and Eritreans since a number of the Americans finished in the top 10 bracket. But Kudos to Robert Cheruiyot there's always a next time as illustrated in Meb's story

Linet Masai Wins Berlin 10,000 Meter Race

As football is to Brazil so is Long Distance Athletics running events to the Kenyan runners! Linet Chepkwemoi Masai of Kenya won the women's 10,000 meters Gold Medal at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin on Saturday 15th August 2009 effectively ending Ethiopia's decade long domination of that race. Linet Masai definately made Kenya proud leaving (photo of Linet Masai crossing finishing line)many to wonder what just makes these young Kalenjin runners bag so many medals time and again. A favourite to win the race was the dreaded Ethiopia's Olympic medalist Tirunesh Dibaba who but due to an injury did not participate in the race. Would the result have been different? Thats the million dollar question but the Kenyan team is set to win more races before the end of the Berlin IAAF events on 23rd August 2009!

Safaricom Lewa Marathon Website

The 2009 Safaricom Lewa Marathon is scheduled for the Saturday the 27th June. The history of the marathon now in its 19th year and the LEWA Black Rhino conservancy is quite alluring and telling. I just had to find much more about it after a buddy stated that LEWA(Swahili word 'lewa' means "drink") was derived from when guys drink non stop for three days, participate in the marathon and then their intoxicating sweat smells of alcohol. But that was just a joke the reality is that the marathon was introduced to generate funds for the conservation of the endangered African Black Rhino species, nowadays its aims include funding of conservation and community projects around Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia and Meru areas. The marathon history is highlighted in the LEWA Conservancy website which i found to be very impressive, educative and well maintained. Kudos to the webmaster!

Interestingly registration for the full and half marathon is currently closed due to early bookings that just indicates the growing popularity of this Spectacular and gruelling international event that attracts runners from Countries such as America, Britain, Australia,India ,Europe etc.The Lewa marathon is truly 'a run in the wild'!
